Lessons after Graduation

IMG_8681Welcome to Part 2 in my Graduation Series! If you haven’t read Part 1 as yet where I talk about my experience, check it out here: Graduation .

Hindsight is a funny thing. It’s always interesting looking back and thinking wow, if only I knew then what I know now. As a recent graduate, I thought it would be beneficial to current undergraduate students to do a graduation series and interview some of my friends who are also recent graduates to hear about their experiences.

Let’s see what these recent graduates had to say.

What has been your biggest lesson during uni?

A recent Business Administration Marketing Advanced Diploma graduate said:

“While attending college, my biggest lesson was understanding the importance of consistency. Through consistency, I was able to unlock my true potential as a student and set a great example for others around me.”

A recent Law Graduate said this:

“The lessons I learned are the importance of keeping your peace. In the sense that if you notice one’s negative vibe you distance yourself and be with people who are all about positivity because AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT. I also learned the importance of believing in yourself and understanding that you are actually capable of conquering the “impossible” though it looks “long” sometimes. Most importantly, I learned that God is your greatest helper, your happy place AND peace of mind. I noticed that the closer I was with God the greater my performance and these scriptures “be anxious for nothing but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” Philippians 4:6 and “Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be achieved” Proverbs 16:3 will follow me through my lifetime.”

A recent Economics graduate said:

“My biggest lesson from university is the art of creating balance.  When striving to succeed, it’s mandatory to focus on your studies, setting goals and trying to not squander your parents’ hard earn money. However, I struggled at the start of university because I was so locked into being excellent academically that I neglected the social aspect of it. I found myself avoiding making friends, simply because I didn’t want added distraction. I quickly realised that this was the safest but not the optimal option. So I had to fix this going into my second and third year. That started with me embracing the changes around, the intellectual aspect and the social. At the finale of my three(3) years of university, I learned to embrace all the changes and reach my goals and purpose with less stress. Hence the art was to make a conscious decision every minute to embrace the changes around me. This includes taking risks that aligned with my goals.”

What has been your biggest lesson after uni?

A recent Clinical Laboratory Sciences graduate said:

“The biggest lesson which I didn’t learn until after school was that uni is the biggest and easiest place to make friends and network because after you leave, it gets harder and you never know who you might need to know in the future.”

A recent International Development and Geography graduate had this to say:

“I read somewhere that when you’re not hearing from God you should remember that the Teacher is always silent during the test. After University you will go through many highs and lows but what is important is how you handle testing periods. The lesson I have learned since graduating is that instead of worrying I should put into practice everything I know about handling difficult situations and attack it. When I do this I can more clearly see the small victories and how God is working out my situation for the better.”

What advice do you have for someone currently in college or university?

recent Clinical Laboratory Sciences graduate said:

“Anyone starting university I would say to enjoy it because it’s gonna fly by faster than you think and also join clubs, and be active but never neglect your school work because that’s the main reason why you’re there.”

recent International Development and Geography graduate had this to say:

“University is made for so much more than just passing assignments, so make sure to plant yourself in friendship groups, social spaces and educational settings (like your university’s career hub and study spaces) and invest your time in these people and/or environments. Doing this will help you to feel more at home and realise you don’t have to face any aspect of your life alone!”

A recent Law graduate said:

“My advice to you is to give it your all but don’t forget that everyone’s “all” is different. Mine is different from yours and vice versa but that doesn’t mean your all cannot be greater than what you think it will be *wink*wink. Enjoy the process, be the positive light that brings a smile on people’s faces because uni can be difficult. Associate yourself with people with purpose and breath. “

A recent Economics graduate said:

“My piece of advice for someone in university is to surround yourself with people who support your goals and dreams. Be humble and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not a race, it’s a journey.”

A recent Business Marketing graduate said:

“My advice to any student in university is to not get discouraged. A problem is simply a solution without an identity. In life, there will be various occasions where the odds will be stacked against you. These types of situations are meant to challenge you and make you better. Every loss in life is a lesson.”

If you’re currently in college or university I wish you the best of luck and I hope you enjoyed the advice from my friends.
