3 Things Cancelled in 2020

Cancel culture was all we saw throughout 2019. Almost everything was cancelled, from celebrities to trends. As we embark on this new year, here are 3 things that we need to cancel this year.

1. Caring what other people think: Often times before putting something out, we may wonder how people are going to perceive us. In terms of social media, we may think we don’t look good enough in a picture and decide against posting it. At work, we may think if we speak up people may think we’re combative. If we live our lives caring more about what other people think of us instead of how we think about ourselves we’ll never truly be happy.

I’m not going to lie, I definitely struggle with this. I overthink too much and I always seem to care about what others will think about the decisions that I make but it’s time to stop caring because, in the long run, it’s important for us to do what truly makes us happy, despite how other people may react to it. Speak up for yourself despite what others may think about you. Post the picture even if you don’t get a ton of likes. Start the business even if people don’t believe in you. Society has conditioned us to constantly be thinking about other people’s opinions of us but it’s time to just do you!

“It’s important for us to do what truly makes us happy, despite how other people may react to it.”

2. Neglecting mental health: In this fast-paced world, we are in a constant battle to keep up, keep up with our work, the latest trends and the latest news. We become so engulfed in trying to keep up with everything that we neglect our mental health. We work so hard at work because we have goals to reach and while achieving goals is a great thing, we should not strive to reach our goals at the expense of our mental health. Our well-being is so important and if we neglect to take care of ourselves it will affect us in the long run. In 2020 or even right now, take time out for you. Take care of yourself.

In between your hard work, TAKE A BREAK. You need it and your body will thank you for it. If things become too overwhelming for you, do not be ashamed to seek professional help and go to therapy. There is nothing awkward or weird about it. Ignore that family member that tells you to just pray about it because in 2020, we need Jesus and Therapy! Some things that we think we can handle on our own or pray it away may require special attention and the situation may be exacerbated if we do not get the necessary assistance we require to deal with it. This year is all about taking care of you, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

“In 2020, we need Jesus and Therapy!”

3. Staying in your Comfort Zone: We all have so much potential on the inside of us but we barely scratch the surface of fulfilling our full potential. We often hold back on our greatness. Maybe we’re not committed enough, not consistent enough, don’t have enough time in our day or we may just be scared. Believe it or not, people actually want to hear/see you utilize your gifts. People are yearning for what you have to offer the world but if you stay in your comfort zone you will never be able to reach your full potential.

Your comfort zone may vary depending on what area you’re in. For some, your comfort zone may be sticking to doing business with the same few clients because you’re an introvert and afraid to network. Another example is sticking to the same content on your blog despite having ideas for other projects because you’re afraid people may not like it. Your comfort zone may also entail doing the same monotonous tasks at work because you’re afraid to ask for something more challenging, in fear of performing the task incorrectly. Don’t be afraid to embrace change. Stop holding back and go after what you want. Show the world your talents and make 2020 your year to reach your full potential.

“People are yearning for what you have to offer the world but if you stay in your comfort zone you will never be able to reach your full potential.”

This blog was created during my first term of Law School. This journey has truly been a roller coaster ride and I want you guys to come on this journey with me as I go through the ups and downs of surviving as a young adult and I hope you're inspired by some of the lessons I've learnt along the way.
