In 2016, I moved to Brighton, England. During my first week in Brighton, I made it my mission to find a church. I left early for church that Saturday morning but somewhere along the way, I got lost. I was really annoyed and I considered turning around and going back home but something told me to keep going and after asking for some assistance, I eventually made it.
In this Christian journey, we may get lost along the way. In this Twenty First century, there are so many distractions. These distractions look different for everyone. Examples of some distractions are relationships, friendships, work, etc. The ones that I can relate to are work and relationships. Sometimes I get so caught up in doing too many things that I lose sight of who I’m doing them for. In relationships, sometimes I put more effort into a relationship than I did with my relationship with God. I’ve had to do
So what do we do about distractions? Ask yourself, is what I’m doing bringing me closer or farther away from God. Then, surrender it to Jesus. So if we really want to develop a REAL relationship with God, we need to surrender our distractions to Him. Sometimes we may be so caught up in the distraction that we don’t even notice that that’s what it is. This is why we need to be constantly communicating with God. By communicating with Him, He will reveal what the distractions are in your life.
People who know your story may judge you or look down on you but listen to me, keep going! We have all made mistakes before. Don’t let the fact that you got lost in a distraction stop you from moving forward. You will get to your destination if you don’t give up.
If I had never kept going to church that day, I would’ve never found a church home that became one of the greatest parts of my spiritual journey and my time in the U.K. There may be things that come in your way that may distract you but even when you get lost, find your way back on the right path and keep going.
Tips for Getting Back on Track
- Pray– Give your distractions to Jesus. Ask Him for forgiveness.
- Seek advice- Get advice from a trusted, wise friend or mentor. Get feedback from a friend about how you should deal with a particular issue in your life.
- Prioritise– While we get caught up in things that may not necessarily be wrong but are still distracting us from God, let us intentionally prioritise our relationship with God. The more time and effort we put into our relationship with God, the less time we’ll have for distractions.
