Lessons on Consistency from the Whole 30 Challenge

Consistency is definitely one thing that I struggle with. However, for some reason February was the month that I decided to buckle down in various areas of my life (maybe because it’s the shortest month of the year). One of those areas was my health.

I can remember coming back home in March 2020 and going into lockdown. With the lack of social interactions and being stuck at home, ya girl was always eating 😂. Well, almost one year later, the weight that I’ve put on shows that that probably wasn’t the best idea. I always told myself I’m still young, I can get serious with my health later on in life.

Well, I am a part of a ladies group who has different themes for each month and the month of February is all about Fitness. Someone who is a part of the group invited people to join her for the Whole 30 Challenge. Can you believe I took her up on this offer?!

The Whole 30 Challenge is said to not be a diet but a way to encourage you to eat only Whole Foods. As such, sugar, grains, dairy and legumes are not allowed. I am currently on Day 12 and to say this is rough would be an understatement but I’m hanging in there. Here are some lessons on consistency that I’ve learned from the Whole 30 Challenge.

1.Mind Game- Honestly, being consistent is a mind game! Pastor Rick Warren once said that your thoughts control your life but you control your thoughts. It is so easy to wallow in sadness and grab that bag of chips. I know because that’s been my life for as long as I’ve known myself lol. However, this month doing Whole 30 I stare at the chips and have to be strong enough not to give in to the temptation. When trying to be consistent, we have to remember that we control our thoughts! You may be tired today and not want to do something that you told yourself you were going to do. Don’t give in to the feeling. In order to be consistent you have to take control and win the battle for your mind. Honestly winning the mind battle, is the true test of your discipline.

2.Plan- We all know the saying failing to plan is…you know the rest. Let me tell you! The days where I didn’t plan out what I was going to eat or didn’t go to the grocery store the night before, I suffered. Lack of planning usually results in me being hungry and miserable (a terrible combination). Not planning also caused unnecessary stress. However, on the days where I actually made the effort to go to the store and cook my meals the night before I didn’t have the stress of figuring out what to eat. Planning is imperative if we’re trying to be consistent in any area of our lives. It won’t only save time and money but it will also help to reduce the stress that not planning causes.

3.Believe in yourself- You have to believe that you can do it. Others may not believe in you but that’s okay. Once you believe in yourself that is what truly matters. To be honest, when I started Whole 30 I didn’t think I would be able to complete it. However I’m about 2 weeks in and I am committed to making it to the end. When you believe in yourself this is even more fuel to help you remain consistent.

Consistency isn’t easy but once you win the mind game, plan and believe in yourself, you’re half way there!

What are some things you do to stay consistent? Let me know in the comments!

This blog was created during my first term of Law School. This journey has truly been a roller coaster ride and I want you guys to come on this journey with me as I go through the ups and downs of surviving as a young adult and I hope you're inspired by some of the lessons I've learnt along the way.
