There are probably tons of different types of people filled with multifaceted idiosyncrasies  2 types of people in this world, “the planner”- they are the ones who think carefully about their next move and plan out every detail and ensure that every t is crossed and every i is dotted before they make a move. Then there are “the impulsive ones” -those people who think of an idea and before they know it, the idea comes into fruition.

I fall into the latter category, you can refer to me as Ms. Impulsive. Whenever I try to find a word to describe myself, impulsive is the only word that comes to mind. When I look at the word impulsive, sometimes it looks like such a terrible word but it doesn’t always have to be. When an idea pops into my head, I think about it for a while and then I take action steps to make it happen. I can vividly remember one day back in 2016, the idea of starting this blog came into my head and I told my friend that I was going to start a blog. That night, my first blog post went live. Not much thought went into it. To be honest, I just did it.

Here are some pros and cons of being impulsive.

Pros

  1. Your ideas will come to life: No one can stop you from doing something. Once your mind is made up, you are going to do exactly what you set out to do. Just this week, I thought about how I would utilize my time in quarantine and when an idea came to my mind, I found a course to enrol in. We make things happen!

oprah

  1. You are a go-getter: You will do what it takes to turn your vision into a reality. You will do the planning, the research and everything necessary to make your dream a reality, while it may be in considerably less time than “the planner”. Something that comes with this is being last minute with things. I am such a last minute person but if I told you I’m going to do something. Trust me, I’m going to do it and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the outcome because when the creative cells start generating, greatness happens!

Cons

  1. We may jump ahead of ourselves: You may not actually be ready to turn that idea in your head into a reality and realizing this can truly be a heartbreak. We hate planning and as a result, we may not think about every single factor that should have been considered. I remember having a few ideas that I wanted to bring to life but upon consultation with some wise friends, I decided the time was not right.

  1. Sometimes, we may forget to seek God before getting started: Instead of including God in the process from the beginning, we may create the vision and then ask Him to bless it. This can be very detrimental because while what we accomplished may have been a good thing, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a God thing. God is still able to bless what we started but imagine how much more of a blessing the vision would get if we included God from the beginning.

How to Find a Balance

  1. Wise Counsel: It is so important for us to have like-minded friends who can be honest with us and tell you the truth when we need it, whether we like it or not. Sometimes other people can see what we failed to see due to our excitement. An extra pair of eyes can go along way. However, be careful who you share your dream with. Pray on it before consulting someone.

  1. Pray to God: Most importantly, it is important to seek God before making any decision. We need to learn to allow God to direct our paths. He is God and He can do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can ever ask, think or imagine but only if we let Him. If we try to drive the boat knowing there’s already a captain, should we really get mad when the boat crashes. We need to stop trying to do God’s job for Him because He has years of experience.

It’s okay to be impulsive but balance is so important. With the pressure to start a course, business, book or podcast during this time in quarantine, let’s not forget to seek God before we make any decision.

Are you a planner or are you the impulsive one?

This blog was created during my first term of Law School. This journey has truly been a roller coaster ride and I want you guys to come on this journey with me as I go through the ups and downs of surviving as a young adult and I hope you're inspired by some of the lessons I've learnt along the way.
