Is it just me or does adulthood sometimes get…overwhelming? Well for the most part, I thought I was doing sorta okay with adulthood. My workload at work was manageable and everything else seemed to be going okay. I had struck that work life balance.
However, this week that all came crashing down. Work spewed into early in the morning and late in the night and my other commitments started piling up. I had lost the balance and I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. If you have had moments where you felt overwhelmed with work, school or other commitments here are 4 tips to consider when you feel overwhelmed:
1.You can’t say Yes to everything: I am definitely guilty of this. There have been so many times when my various commitments all happened to be at the same time because I never like to say no. I can remember being a part of 2 zoom sessions and having to do something in both of those sessions that we’re going on at the same time. To say it was stressful would be an understatement. While it may be difficult for you to say no to people, you have to understand that you can only handle so much. If you continuously take on extra tasks you will be unable to fully dedicate yourself to the commitments you actually care about. Choose wisely. Think smart. Will this project assist me or derail me from meeting my goals?
2. Make a list: If you have a huge workload it’s important for you to write down everything you need to do so that you don’t forget. We can easily say we’ll remember then when the time actually arrives we forget all about it. I am someone who doesn’t really use planners but this year my planners have come in very handy in ensuring that I avoid scheduling conflicts and remember all of the tasks I need to perform. Make a schedule. Write down your assignments in order of priority. This will help you a lot!
3. Take breaks: While it may be easy for us to continue our work into the wee hours of the night because we need to get it done, it’s important to remember that you need to take care of yourself. You need a break to rejuvenate. Do not over work yourself. Take time for you. On your break, do not think about your work. Have a snack, watch a show or catch up with a friend. You won’t regret it.
4. Ask for help: It can be so easy for us to do everything ourselves because that’s what we always did but when more opportunities come your way you have to be willing to ask for assistance. No man is an island and if someone can assist you in making your life easier then let them. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for assistance or if you’re in charge of something delegate tasks. This will help ease your work load and people may be happy to assist you.
There are many ways to help make your work easier. Don’t be afraid to implement these tips into your every day life. I hope you found these tips useful and they help to ease the overwhelming feeling that you are experienced. While adulthood can be…A LOT, remember, you got this!
