This week in Toastmasters I gave a speech entitled “Adulting is Hard.” This title brought me back to my first ever blog post under that same title. 5 years later and I’m still not adjusted fully. There are moments when Adulting can be extremely overwhelming whether it’s because of unexpected bills, stress at work or basic things in life not going as planned. In those moments when Adulting gets hard remember:
There’s a Lesson in every situation
In those moments when things aren’t going your way take time to pause. I know it’s easier said than done. I am guilty of freaking out at the slightest sign of inconvenience. However my challenge for this week was to not be so easily angered. I get irritated VERY easily when things don’t go my way. However I’m trying to learn that everything doesn’t always go my way. There is a lesson in every situation and sometimes the lesson doesn’t come to us right away but if we seek to find the lessons in the moments where things go wrong eventually we’ll find them. So how about instead of complaining the next time something goes wrong stop to think about what the lesson could be.
Timing is Everything
In the society that we live in we expect to have things instantly. While we long for things to happen in our timing, we have to remember that things happen in God’s timing and sometimes His timing is different than ours. Just last year, I was expecting something to happen at our specific time but it didn’t happen until months later. Now I am waiting on something and it has yet to happen. While going through the moment it’s very hard to accept the fact that things don’t happen in my time. However, in adulting, we have to trust God’s timing, maybe He’s protecting us from something or preparing something greater than we could ever imagine as we wait.
Don’t Compare your Story to Others
Be proud of each little step you take towards your goals. Yes, someone may have achieved a goal before you but their story is not your story and your story is just as beautiful. We’re all on different journeys in life. We can’t expect our story to unfold in the exact way that someone else’s story unfolds. There are different factors that contribute to everyone’s story unfolding the way it does. Some people have a head start over others and that’s okay if you didn’t have that head start. Some people are on Chapter 10 of their story and you’re still on Chapter 1 and that’s okay. Comparison is the thief of joy so don’t let it kill yours!
Encourage Yourself
I always try to remind myself that I got this. Honestly there are so many moments where I just get so overwhelmed and fed up with everything I have going on. However, in those moments I try to give myself pep talks to fuel me to keep going. We look for motivation everywhere else but within ourselves. Remind yourself that “You have what it takes to handle any situation life throws at you!”
Adulting is hard but I hope these tips keep you going in the difficult moments.
