Welcome back to another week of my Career series. Last week we talked about Top Tips for Applying for Jobs .
So you heard back from the Human Resources department of the company you applied to. Now what?!
In this week’s blog, we’ll talk about what to do to prepare for your new job.
Do your research on the company
Take time to go on the company’s website that you are about to work to (if they have one). Learn who works at the company. Who is in your department? Who is in charge of the company? What is the company’s motto? Figure out what attracted you to the company and keep that in mind when things may start to become difficult on the job.
Invest in work attire
It’s time to reboot that wardrobe. Firstly, depending on the work environment, it’s important for you to get the type of clothing that you are required to wear on the job. If you do not know what the dress code is, contact the HR Manager to find out. Invest in a few nice dresses(for women), dress shirts and ties (for men), pant suits, tops, jackets and sweaters and you can always mix and match your outfits. While we know that you’re qualified for the part, you need to look the part too. By looking the part on your first day, this will help to boost your confidence and make you feel like you’re ready to slay the day (pun intended).
Refresh your memory
This is the most important tip. If you are going into a job where you got a degree or certification in the area, it’s important for you to refresh your memory on the area. If it is a specialist area example corporate law, read up on different aspects of corporate law instead of researching on the law generally. Familiarize yourself with the material. Read over your old notes and textbooks.
Work on Your Mindset
I think this is one of the most important tips. It’s important to ensure that you have a winning mindset even before you start the job. If you’re still in the waiting process and haven’t gotten the job yet, think positive. Remember that you deserve good things and you are worthy. If you have already gotten the job, remind yourself that there is a reason why this company chose you to work for them. You have great potential and there is a purpose for you being at that company. While you should have a winning mindset and think positive, remember to remain humble. No matter where you end up in life, never forget where you came from. Treat every one you meet with respect and dignity because you would want the same for you.
