There is a Reason Why I am Here

I am supposed to smile and remain quiet
Because I’ll be too disrespectful if I start a riot
I am supposed to sit in the back and keep still
Because speaking up may cause me to get killed
But the truth is I don’t care
Because there is a reason why I am here
What is it that you see when you look at me?
Is it my confidence and strong personality?
Is it the fact that I can brighten someone’s day and put a smile on their face?
No, the first thing you see when you look at me is my race
I know my melanin is undeniably amazing
But that’s not the only thing about that me that’s worth praising
I am ambitious, courageous and strong
I’ve been fighting to get to this point in my life for so long
I am determined to be great no matter what it takes
I will continue to press on despite all of the aches
The other thing that you noticed when you looked at me was that I am an emotional, annoying, overdramatic woman
But no, that’s not who I am
I am a dynamic individual who WILL be a world changer
I just hope that the fact that I am a black woman doesn’t get me into too much danger
I am powerful and my voice will be heard
I will stand up and you will hear me even before I utter a word
My presence is to be feared because I don’t just represent black girls but I represent me
Therefore, I refuse to settle for your mediocrity and my intelligence you will see
