Entrepreneurship: Cedie The MUA

Welcome back to the Surviving Your Twenties Series where I interview inspiring, young people doing great things in their field. So far we’ve talked about Creativity and University. This week and next week, the focus is Entrepreneurship.

This week’s feature is Flawless Addictionz, a makeup artistry company founded by Cedrica Neymour aka Cedie The Makeup Artist. Cedrica has always been business minded so it’s no surprise that she started her own makeup company. She recently graduated with a Business Degree and shortly thereafter, her makeup artistry journey took off. Flawless Addictionz has now branched into selling makeup products, under the brand Flawless Addictionz Cosmetics.

Let’s learn about entrepreneurship and makeup from Cedie The Makeup Artist.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Cedrica: “My family inspired me to start my own business. Being around an entrepreneur based family, they encourage the topic of being your own boss. When it comes to makeup, I enjoy being able to express myself with no limits.  Having the ability to enhance someone’s features and showcasing their personality through makeup is what truly inspires me everyday. I’m able to connect on a deeper level with my clients by using my talent and I thank God everyday for picking this field for me.”

Why do you love makeup?

Cedrica: “I love makeup because it gives me the ability to enhance someone’s beauty and boost their confidence.”

What were some challenges that you faced before launching and after your business took off? How did you overcome these challenges?

Cedrica: “Cash flow management, creating a marketing strategy, and finding customers were the challenges that I faced before launching my business but after doing research I was able to navigate my way through these factors . After my business took off, the biggest challenge would have to be staying consistent with my marketing strategies.”

What have been some of your proudest moments as a business owner?

Cedrica: “Some of my proudest moments were being able to see a steady profit, building a close relationship with my clients as well as receiving new clients. Accomplishing a goal before the date I’ve set was also a great accomplishment for me.”

What advice do you have for young people interested in starting a business?

Cedrica: “My advice would be do your research,  stop overthinking and take the risk! don’t let the what-if syndrome get you. The most important thing you can do is don’t believe in quick success, everything takes time. If you want something, put your feet in the room and work. ”

What’s the secret to a great makeup look?

Why didn’t you wait until you were older to start your business?

Cedrica: “Growing up, I thought that your 20s were the years that you spend building your career and taking risks so you have time for trial and error. I didn’t wait because I wanted a head start.”

What’s your favourite makeup product and why?

Cedrica: “My favourite makeup product is Mac’s Cheeky Bronze Mineralize Skin Finish Bronzer. It’s the perfect highlight shade for women of colour! It brings out our beautiful melanin.”

What do you say to people who tell you that there are already many people in your field so what’s the point of you doing it too?

Cedrica: “Everyone has their own style, technique, and personality. What others are lacking I might have and what I’m lacking someone else has. When you walk into a learning institution there are 16 students learning how to do hair and nails, in one barbershop there’re 10 barbers, but each of them has their own clientele. It’s up to you to stay consistent and perfect your talent and stand your ground.”

What’s your top tip for surviving your twenties?

Cedrica: “There’s more than one tip for me but the top one would be to save and invest.
